Snap Acquires Illumix in AR Expansion Move
Snap has acquired augmented reality technology company Illumix as part of its efforts to expand its presence in spatial computing and wearable technology.
The acquisition, first reported by Variety, will bring Illumix’s augmented reality and mapping capabilities into Snap’s product ecosystem. The technologies are expected to support the development of Specs, Snap’s next-generation smart glasses platform. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Snap said Illumix’s experience in developing real-world augmented reality experiences and scaling mapping technology was a factor in the acquisition. The company is also expected to retain the majority of Illumix’s workforce following the deal.
Founded in 2017 by Kirin Sinha, Illumix develops augmented reality products designed to combine digital content with physical environments. The company drew attention within the industry after co-developing Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery, an augmented reality version of the video game franchise released in 2019.
In recent years, Illumix has expanded into artificial intelligence-powered experiences that interact with and adapt to actual-world surroundings. The company’s work has focused on technologies that connect digital content with physical spaces through augmented reality.
The acquisition follows the launch of Specs Inc., a Snap subsidiary focused on developing augmented reality eyewear. Snap launched the subsidiary several months before announcing the Illumix acquisition.
The company is expected to provide additional information about its Specs platform at the Augmented World Expo 2026, scheduled for later this month in Long Beach, California.
Snap has continued to identify augmented reality as a key area of investment. In its latest communication to shareholders, the company described smart glasses as the next major shift in consumer computing and compared the technology’s potential impact to that of smartphones.
The company likewise reported growth in content creation for Specs. According to Snap, the number of lenses developed for the platform increased by 28 per cent year-on-year.
Alongside its investment in augmented reality, Snap reported improved financial outcomes for the first quarter of 2026. Revenue reached $1.53 billion during the period, representing a 12 per cent increase from the previous year.
The company also reported a narrower net loss than in the same quarter a year earlier.
Snap’s flagship platform, Snapchat, recorded 483 million daily active users during the first quarter of 2026. The figure reflected continued growth in the platform’s audience during the period.
The acquisition of Illumix comes as Snap continues to invest in augmented reality technologies and expand development of its Specs platform. The transaction adds Illumix’s mapping and augmented reality capabilities to the company’s existing portfolio while bringing a technology developer with experience in augmented reality and artificial intelligence-powered experiences into the organisation.
